ward tonight. jim mullen in the race for alderman. the current is ben dougherty. jim mullen is paralyzed from the neck down but he says that wouldn't effect his ability to serve the 41st ward which runs along the edge of the city. he is officially in the race for alderman. officer mullen was responding to a call when a gunman hit him one in his spine leaving him a quadriplegic. >> it's going to be a little different but it would put me back on the beat. >> reporter: he tells me he tries to keep on a positive outlook on his life.

many high profile figures have spent time with him throughout the years. his wife hasn't left his side and looks forward to helping him throughout the campaign. if elected, his top priority will be to get more people on the streets. >> we're not policing out there. we're reacting to crime. we're not preventing anything. and we can't because we don't have the man power to do it. >> reporter: he also wants to focus on fiscal responsibility and improving the recycling standards. he doesn't have much of a campaign war chest but is confident he will win the race. >> ever since i've had this injury, the people of chicago have just supported me and my family from day one. and i believe that'll happen again. >> reporter: candidates who are running for alderman of the 41st ward including mary

o'connor and another chicago police officer who was injured -- shot in the line of duty named richard gonzalez. this will be an interesting race out here. candidates have until december 15th to file. carol mosley bronx is thinking about becoming a candidate for the school. she made history in 1992 when she became the first african- american woman elected to the u.s. senate. she says she won't make a decision about jumping into the mayor's race until after the weekend. another candidate testing the waters, jesse jackson jr. linking him to misdeeds involving rod blagojevich or they would have charged him. on a radio show this morning, jackson said he was at a meeting in 2008 where a

businessman offered to raise one million dollars blagojevich's campaign. that it would be in exchange for appointing jackson to though seat. jackson says he never heard that. and if he's a conspirator, prosecutors should bring it on. parents heading up a march. they secured a meeting with the chicago public schools. several dozen participants want a broken down house turned into a library for whittier elementary. tension today when police forced open the doors. nobody arrested. officials say that building is unsafe and must be torn down. but they'll hold off until after the meeting. whittier has classroom libraries but parents say they're too small. the united airlines, continental merger cleared for takeoff. it will create the world's

on that chair. it cost about $7000. it's the most portable allowing her to ride in regular vehicles. it was trash day in the neighborhood. the chair could have been picked up by metal scrappers. call the elgin police if you have information. aldi foods now part of an investigation involving an atm scam in the northwest suburbs. bank withdraws have been reported by people in wheeling and buffalo grove. a spokesperson from aldi says they have conducted a thorough review and removed all terminals that may have been affected. everyone's out of surgery from the postal worker giving a kidney to her customer.

suntimes headline reads stodger's going away gift for pal. >> i'm not taking this furniture home so it's not a gift. >> reporter: eugene is the spokesperson for stroger and also his best friend. the suntimes report stroger signed off on $13,000 worth of new furniture for mullens office. >> they lied. >> reporter: the furniture was ordered in february. they still haven't gotten paid. >> i'm a small business person. it's a lot of money effecting my cash flow. >> reporter: mullens says it replaced furniture that was decades old and unsafe. he says the secretary never submitted the bills. and he claims the price tag included furniture for several offices, not just his. plus furniture that was never delivered for stroger.

permanently be sealed this weekend. the well will be pumped with cement and mud plugging it from the bottom. the well spilled millions of gallons into the gulf before it was shut. natalee holloway's mother has a face to face in a jail with the man suspected in her daughter's disappearance from aruba. the teen vanished in aruba five years ago. her mother tells nbc she entered the cell to confront joran van der sloot who's in custody for accused of killing a peruvian woman in may. she wants him to know she's determined to get her answers. pope benedict carrying on with his visit to england despite a terrorist scare. officers acting on a tip raiding a garbage depot this morning and arrested five

to this day abraham bolden swears that jfk was killed because of a slip up of secret service detail. something he knows because he was there. hand picked to be the first black to serve on the detail. he's written a book about what he knows and he's one of chicago's very own. >> he says i want you to meet mr. bolden. he's the jackie robinson of the secret service. >> reporter: abraham bolden's memory is sharp as a tack. he recalls almost every detail of the april day in 1961 at chicago's mccormick place. boldin was 26 when john f kennedy asked him to be the first african-american on the white house secret service detail. >> i was assigned downstairs. >> because you were black? >> because i was black. it was strictly a racial

assignment. here i am in front of a washroom and i meet the president of these united states of america. >> reporter: the washroom the last place he thought he'd meet the president. he was about to get the chance of a lifetime that was bittersweet. >> he said mr. boldin, he says have they ever had a negro assigned to the white house detail in washington, d.c.? i looked at the agent and at him and i said not to my knowledge, mr. president. he looked and smiled and said would you like to be the first? i said yes, sir, mr. president. >> reporter: he suffered bold racism. he said it made him angry but taught him tolerance. >> she happens to be a negro and he looked out and said

there goes a [bleep]. and i'm sitting right next to him. and it was all i could do. my first reflex was to give this guy a shot and break his jaw. >> reporter: boldin says since agents weren't used to a black man in their presence, they talked freely around him. they said they wouldn't protect kennedy in case of an assassination attempt. >> i never will forget it. they broke in and said the president has been shot. dallas, texas. and it hit me like a thud because i knew what those agents had said, what i had heard them say. >> reporter: boldin said there were two prior times where threats were made against the president. >> we get called into a meeting in the secret service office. he says those investigations, you just wipe them out of your mind. turn in all the notes you have on them and just bring them in, any thoughts that you have on

those cases you bring them in to the special agent in charge. they bundled up them and sent them to washington, d.c. >> reporter: but when the commission looked into the assassination, none of the evidence he remembers from the two assassination threats showed up. >> i said somebody's trying to cover up something. and that brought me in to it. i couldn't do that. the president entrusted me with his life. >> reporter: when boldin tried to expose the agents, he was arrested, tried, and found guilty of accepting a bribe from two known counterfeiters. he served three years and three months of a six year sentence on what he says were trumped up charges. but he doesn't regret it. >> i would do it again. it brought me face to face with reality. with myself. with my spiritual self. >> reporter: boldin has written a book.

the echo from day -- dealy plaza. he spends this time on the south side of chicago trying to teach young people the importance of tolerance. >> i love america. america is my country. so when america makes a mistake like they did in my case, then you stand up and you tell america it made a mistake. >> reporter: and that's what he's doing. abraham boldin, one of chicago's very own. >> he served from 1960 to 1964. when he was released from prison, he returned to chicago. he tried to get his conviction overturned to no avail. in order to receive a pardon you have to admit to doing something wrong which he says he never did. >> i'm amazed at people who break through the color barrier. >> and thank goodness for them. if not for him, a lot of us

apple launched its official sale of the ipad in china today. hundreds coming out to the apple stores in beijing to pick up the wi-fi models. it costs 20% more than in the u.s. because china has higher taxes. look out apple. samsung is making its way to compete. about half the size of the ipad. has two cameras for video conferences.

i have to share this. that's hail. it destroyed the 14th green at the auburn hill golf course. this dog saying what in the world has gone on here? but that's what it looked like wednesday afternoon after that mammoth hailstorm. part of the storm that produced the tornado that hit new york city and did all the damage you've been hearing about. here in chicago, a gorgeous day with a bit of a recovery in the temperatures. tonight the south winds are yet to blow. we have the coolest weekend on the way with the heaviest rains in this area in the last two and a half weeks. we've only at .2 of an inch of rain on any day the past two weeks. as you look at the sunsetting there, we need .2 of an inch to make that happen. a cool, blustery rain will fall part of the weekend.

a high of 81 in freeport. tonight at 65 and the winds are southerly. we're getting into the warm air that will carry us in to tomorrow morning before the winds turn and begin a slide. which should keep us in the 60s tomorrow and the low 60s for highs sunday. there's the plot of the temperatures across the area. here are the rains in texas. part of the moisture pool that's sweeping northward and going to consolidate with a wave that's developing on this front and bring us clouds later in the day -- rains later in the day. clouds sooner than that. here's another texas weather cam shot. and look at some of the rains that have come down in the lone star state. we're going to take this moisture marrying to this front. look how the precipitation was mixed with snow in north

dakota. in the 480 miles from kansas to south dakota, temperatures varied from 93 to the upper 30s at one point this afternoon. this lobe of cold air is getting ready to charge southward into the lower 48 and keep us cool as the weekend goes on. it's 65 now and 67 in madison and dubuque. it won't be obvious when you join the day tomorrow that we're going to get colder. because temperatures are warming and will into the morning hours. then we get into this cool air mass, the other shoe drops and temperatures drop. there's moisture streaming up as evidence by the dew points. look at the heat indices and the way the air feels tonight. it feels like 35 in bismarck. there are frost and freeze warnings in the upper midwest as close by as minnesota

tonight. so quite a contrast in the atmosphere. rain will result. we'll show you in a second how that will happen. humidity 63%. moderate pollen values today. here's the radar view of these patches of rain that are coming at us from the northwest. some of these could be in the area by the morning. then it'll be steadier and by mid-afternoon ought to be raining steadily here throughout the evening and tomorrow night. showers will linger then as moisture -- the moisture field deepens. there you can see the moisture through texas producing the big thunderstorms. kind of a wet pattern developing. as you'd expect, powerful upper level winds. which carry these little impulses on the jet that pulls the warm air up and over the cool air that's coming in with this high pressure. this thing is producing

northerly winds. putting us in the cool air at the surface. if you're up 2000 feet above us, there's a 45 miles an hour wind blowing over that mass that gives rise to these clouds. our model, this latest one shows the heaviest rain south of the chicago area. when you marry all the models of rainfall, you get something in the neighborhood of .6 inches of rain. it won't rain continuously. cold air and warm air, you don't get a much bigger contrast than in autumn. we certainly have one this weekend. we're straddling the boundary is what it amounts to. we think we'll bring that warm air back up into the area for tuesday. we can shoot up into the 80s then cool back down wednesday and warm up again thursday next week. so we're not done with the warm weather yet. it's just that this weekends we have cool air coming in.

becoming windy tonight and milder. there may be a shower or thunderstorm in less than 20% of the area. they'll be wandering around by morning. tomorrow clouds over turning cooler. and this will be a very heavy overcast. our models are telling us the clouds will reach from above the ground all the way up to 31,000 feet. that will block any sunshine. then a steady rain by mid- afternoon. highs tomorrow about 67 but falling back to the low 60s as the winds take us down to 54 tomorrow night. then cloudy and blustery. high of only 62. that's pretty cool. that is not beauteous. but it will be on tuesday. mark, we'll get those 0es back here there. >> check back with you in a minute. >> and we'll tell you more

not often you have this kind of action. there's igor's track. if you're traveling, sunday is the day for the most direct effect of igor in bermuda. in our area, our models continue to insist that along the south flank of that jet stream and the cool air that covers the northern u.s. and will be blowing in here tomorrow, we're going to get some pretty good rains. we have some models that are suggesting an inch and a half so ilooks like what'll happen is there might be a shower or two scattered around in the morning. if you got outdoor plans, you may be able to dodge those. even into early afternoon, showers scattered. but a steady rain develops out of that. then it's just kind of showery and gray and cool. these clouds will be 6 miles deep. you're not going to get any sunlight through there.

sox led 1-0. then the sox bullpen again gave the game in the 7th. and lead the game 9-2 now in the 9th inning. cubs in florida to battle the marlins trying to make it four in a row. they got the lead by dempster. soto in the 6th one to center. two on for the marlins, watch this. a blooder. ties the game and castro to the rescue. saves the game. cubs win 2-0. joe tore made it official today he will step down as the manager of the dodgers at the end of the season. after winning four titles with the yankees now 70 years old. he'll be replaced by don mattingly. the bears head for dallas tomorrow.

they will need to bring their a- game to pull off an upset on sunday. cutler and the offense a mess. turnovers killed them of course. however the cowboy's defense a lot better. demarcus ware can hunt down quarterbacks with the best of them. they have a lot of build on from game one. >> if you watch the game and pay attention to what we were doing, we got some big chunks. we were moving the ball efficiently. we were doing good stuff. away the turnovers, you put more sixes on the board. we got a good game going. direction the offense is going. obviously there's stuff to clean up. but moving the ball, the only people that are going to stop this at this point is ourselves. the party's about to end for the blackhawks. the summer of stanley cup celebration ends tomorrow when they hold their first practice.
